The St. Louis Jr. Blues capped their season
this evening with a 6-4 win over the Toledo Cherokee winning
the Hurster Cup for the 4th consecutive season. The Cherokee
would strike first on the power play midway through the first period
as Ryan Ford scored. The period ended with Toledo
ahead by one. St. Louis would strike next as Ryan
Loach scored the first two goals of the game within 4
minutes to give St. Louis the 2-1 lead, both goals came on
the power play. Nate Urbaniak tied the game for Toledo
with 11:00 minutes to go in the period. Loach
answered right back scoring even strength to regain the lead 3-2
after 2 periods. In the third period, the teams would exchange
goals. Kyle Gouge scored his first of two even
strength on a low shot from the circle. Toledo had the
answer as J.C. Gulch scored with just under 5:00
minutes to go on the power play to close the gap to one. Gouge
answered right back scoring from an almost identical spot to regain
the lead. Toledo never quit as Andrew Hess
crashed the net and banged home a rebound, again on the power play,
to close the gap to one again. With :20 seconds left, C.J.
Chappell won a battle at the point, cleared the zone, beat
the defenseman to the puck and put it into an empty net with :12
seconds remaining to seal the win.
Despite playing their 4th game in 4 days, the Cleveland
Jr. Lumberjacks came out strong and easily handled the Massachusetts
Maple Leafs of the CHA. The Maple Leafs came out strong in the
first period, out playing and out shooting the Jr. Jacks.
As the period progressed Cleveland picked up the pace and
started to control the play. The first period ended with the
game tied at 0-0. However, in the second period Cleveland would
score all they would need. Kevin Colleran lit
the lamp just 5:00 minutes into the period on the power play.
Five minutes later Evan Dube would score his first of
two to increase the Jr. Jacks lead on the power play.
In the third period Cleveland would put the game away as Dube,
Mike Schultz and Grant Tonne would score
for the Jr. Jacks. Paul Beckwith stopped
all 32 shots he faced to get the shut-out win and bid to Nationals.
The stage is set for the 2006 Hurster Cup
Championship. In Saturday's first game the Cleveland Jr.
Lumberjacks and St. Louis Jr. Blues both needed a win to
advance to the Championship game. Both teams came out a little
tentative in the first but St. Louis would get on the board
midway through the period when Ryan Kretzer scored on
the power play as he beat Steve Somerfield to take the
lead. The period ended with St. Louis up 1-0. The
second period began much differently as the Jr. Blues came
out flying, scoring 4 goals in the period. The Jr. Blues
defense led the way offensively in the period scoring 3 of the 4
goals. Pat Dolan scored his first of two early
in the period even strength to extend the St. Louis lead.
Less than :30 seconds later Brendan Sheehan would put St.
Louis up by 3 as he beat the Cleveland defense and
goaltender on a quick break-in. Pat Dolan would
notch his second of the game on a one-timer from the point on the
power play that beat the goaltender off the post and in. Chris
Saracino scored the fifth and final goal on a blast from the
point that found its way into the net through the goaltender and the
period ended with St. Louis up 5-0. Kirk Bolduc
would break the shut-out early in the third period as he beat Cal
Heeter cleanly on a quick transition goal. Heeter
stopped 21 of 22 shots to get the win while Somerfield
stopped 32 of 37 in the loss. The win gives St.
Louis the opportunity to win their fourth consecutive Hurster
Cup Championship. Cleveland will now face off against
the Mass Maple Leafs for the third Nationals bid.
In Game 2 of the day, the Toledo Cherokee
squared off against the Motor City Chiefs. The Cherokee
came out strong from the beginning scoring 3 first period goals and
never looked back. Korey Abbeglen continued his
strong play in the tournament scoring even strength early in the
period. Ryan Ford would score on the power play
to extend the lead to two. Nik Stroup closed the
gap to one but that was as close as the Chiefs would get in
the game. Tyler Pilmore also scored on the power
play to extend the Cherokee lead. The second period was
much the same as the Cherokee scorched the Chiefs for
3 unanswered goals. Tom Higgins scored twice and J.C.
Gulch scored once to extend the lead to 6-1. In the
third period Dan Bujaki and Jesper Hedell
scored to cap off the scoring for the Cherokee. Dan
Venet and Josh Baker combined to stop 26 of 34
shots in the loss while J.R. Engelbert and Steve
Madej stopped 29 of 30 in the win. The Cherokee
will represent the CSHL as the #2 representative at the USA Hockey
Jr. B Nationals next weekend in Philadelphia but first will face off
against the Jr. Blues for the 2006 Hurster Cup Championship.
Day 2 of the Hurster Cup playoffs kicked off tonight
with the two unbeaten teams in the tournament met. Toledo and
Cleveland, both day 1 winners, took the ice and skated to a
4-4 tie. The Jr. Jacks built a 3 goal lead only to see
it evaporate in the second period. Mike Schultz
scored on the power play early in the game to give Cleveland
the lead. Tom Higgins scored his first of two
goals to tie the game at the 15:00 minute mark. David
Bruder scored 5:00 minutes later to regain the lead for Cleveland.
Kirk Bolduc gave the Jr. Jacks a two goal
lead to close out the scoring in the first period. P.J.
Harris gave the Jr. Jacks the 3 goal lead early in
the second period even strength. Toledo would go on to
score 3 unanswered goal in the period to tie the game. Higgins
scored his second of the game to close the gap for Toledo.
Korey Abbeglen would then be the hero as he scored
twice in the second, including the game tying goal with just :08
seconds remaining in the period on the power play. The teams
remained scoreless through the 3rd period and overtime. J.R.
Englebert and Steve Madej combined to stop 32
of 36 in the game while Paul Beckwith stopped 43 of
47.
In the second game of the evening the St. Louis
Jr. Blues faced off against the Motor City Chiefs.
As it turns out, based on the results of the first game, the winner
of this game would be mathematically eliminated from the Hurster Cup
and one of the Nationals bids still up for grabs. St. Louis
came out strong but it was Motor City that struck
first. As a penalty expired the Chiefs caught St.
Louis running around in their defensive zone. Zac
Lewis took a pass on the blue line, walked a sliding Jr.
Blues player and beat St. Louis goaltender Cal
Heeter to take a one goal lead. The lead was
short-lived as the Jr. Blues scored 5 unanswered goals in the
game. Ryan Loach tied the game on the power play
as he tipped a shot from the point. Ryan Kretzer
would score the game winner with 1:00 minute remaining in the period
as he beat goaltender Josh Baker short side. Brendan
Sheehan, Kyle Gouge and Tim Jost
would all add insurance goals later in the second period and in the
third. Cal Heeter stopped 20 of 21 shots to get
the win while Josh Baker and Dan Venet
combined to stop 44 of 49 in the loss. The loss eliminated the
Chiefs.
The scenario for Sunday's game:
If Toledo wins they will play in the Hurster
Cup Championship.
If St. Louis wins they will play in the Hurster Cup
Championship and Cleveland will play the Mass Maple Leafs for
the league to get the third berth.
If Cleveland wins they will play in the Hurster Cup
Championship and St. Louis will play the Mass Maple Leafs to
gain the third nationals berth for the league. That berth
would go to the loser of the Hurster Cup Championship game.
If Motor City wins, Toledo will need tie breakers to
get into the Championship game.
The 2006 Hurster Cup playoffs kicked off this
evening in St. Louis as the Motor City Chiefs and Cleveland
Jr. Lumberjacks squared off in the first game of the
night. After a scoreless first period the Jr. Jacks
ripped off 4 quick goals to take a 4-0 lead in the second. Graeme
Laxton, Chase Porter, Cody Ayers and
Porter again scored in less than 3:00 minutes.
The period would end with Cleveland ahead 4-0. In the
third, the Chiefs came storming back launching 25 shots
in the 3rd period on the Jr. Jacks goaltender Paul
Beckwith. Jesse Edwards would finally
solve Beckwith short handed midway through the period
as he crashed the net and banged home the rebound. Steve
Popp would scored four minutes later on the power play in
much the same fashion as a rebound squirted out and he chipped it
over and in. Grant Tonne sealed the win with an
empty net goal as the Jr. Jacks down the second seeded Chiefs
in a 5-2 final. Dan Venet and Josh Baker
combined to stop 24 of 28 with an empty net while Beckwith stopped
53 of 55 to get the win.
In the second game of the night, the first seed St.
Louis met a determined Toledo team. Toledo
came out strong from the first whistle and never looked back. Korey
Abbeglen started the scoring just 3:00 minutes after he
one-timed a shot off of the face off in the St. Louis zone.
St. Louis would work to tie the game a couple of minutes
later as Grant Everett crashed the Toledo goal
and chipped in a rebound. Tom Higgins put Toledo
ahead for good late in the period even strength. Abbeglen
would give the Cherokee a two goal lead midway through the
period but Pat Dolan for St. Louis, closed the
gap beating Englebert low and wide. After a
scramble around the net Tyler Pilmore slid the puck
past a sprawling Rob Moss to increase the lead to 4-2
after two periods. In the third period, St. Louis came
out strong but couldn't beat Englebert as he stopped
all 12 shots he faced that period and 33 of 35 in the game to get
the win. Moss stopped 22 of 26 in the loss.
St. Louis faces Motor City in game two
and Toledo plays Cleveland.
The Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks claimed the
last playoff spot as they beat the Peoria Mustangs 4-2 in
game three of their best of 3 series. The Jr. Jacks got
goals midway through the period as Marcel Alvarez
scored on the power play and Steve Osacky scored even
strength to give Cleveland the lead. Russ
Anderson closed the gap late in the period even
strength. In the second period, Cleveland got goals
early from Grant Tonne and Graeme Laxton
to take a 4-1 lead. Derek Masterson scored with
:29 seconds to go in the period to end the second down 4-2. Paul
Beckwith stopped 53 of 55 including all 27 in the third to
get the win. Ryan Gregory stopped 23 of 27
taking the loss. Cleveland becomes the 4th seed in the
Hurster Cup Finals and open play against Motor City on
Thursday in St. Louis
So far in the CSHL playoffs there have been near upsets, but none
have been successful. Last Saturday night in St. Louis, the Chicago
Force pushed the Jr. Blues to overtime but couldn't
overcome a two goal deficit as the Jr. Blues win 4-3 in
overtime. The Force jumped on top, scoring on their
second 5-3 power play of the series as Rob Duebel redirected
a shot from the point. Tim Jost would tie the
game for St. Louis, also on the power play and the period
would end tied at one. Ed Effinger and Ryan
Kretzer put the Jr. Blues up by two midway through
the second period but Chicago would close the gap before the
end of the period. Mike Glowa fired a cross-ice
pass into the St. Louis zone that knuckled past the Jr.
Blues goaltender and the period ended with St. Louis up
3-2. Chicago would score the lone goal in the third
period on the power play as Duebel scored his second
of the game, again on the power play, to tie the game and force
overtime. In overtime, both teams exchanged penalties but
neither was able to score. With just under 6:00 minutes to go
in the first overtime, Chad Larkowski picked up the
puck and fired a quick shot that beat the goaltender five
hole. Eric Levine was outstanding in goal for Chicago
turning away 72 of 76 shots in the game. Cal Heeter
picks up the win for St. Louis stopping 28 of 31. The Jr.
Blues will now hold the first seed in the Hurster Cup Finals to
begin next weekend.
In Detroit, the Motor City Chiefs completed a two game
sweep of the Michigan Ice Dogs as they skate to a 7-4
win. The Chiefs scored two first period goals and the Ice
Dogs were not able to overcome the deficit. Zac
Lewis scored two of his three on the power play to give the Chiefs
the lead after one. Steve Popp increased the
lead to 3 goals early in the second period scoring the lone even
strength goal of the game for either team. Joe Trotter
and Shawn Skelly would close the gap to one as each
scored on the power play for the Ice Dogs. Zac
Lewis gave Motor City a two goal lead scoring short
handed and completing the hat trick. Tim Whalin scored
on the power play with just over a minute to go in the second and
the Chiefs took a lead of 5-2 into the third. The would
increase that lead to 7-2 on two power plays as Nik Stroup
and Jack Goodell score. Joe Szwed
and Chris Barczuk scored on the power play and short
handed, respectively, but it was too little too late for the Ice
Dogs. Dan Venet stopped 46 of 50 to get the
win while Mike Davis and John Stefko
combined to stop 23 of 30 in the loss. The Chiefs will
now head to St. Louis and the Hurster Cup as the number two seed.
In Peoria, the Mustangs came back strong on Saturday night
and forced a game three with the Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks
winning 3-1. Russ Anderson scored his first of
two goals on the power play just 4 minutes into the second
period. Mike Schultz scored the lone Cleveland
goal 11 minutes into the same period but Anderson
would score at even strength, giving the Mustangs all they
would need as the teams headed into the 3rd period with Peoria up
2-1. Cal Getschmann scored an insurance goal in
the third period and Ryan Gregory shut down Cleveland
stopping 22 of 23 to get the win. Paul Beckwith
stopped 44 of 47 taking the loss. They play today in the
rubber match at 1:45 CST.
The Toledo Cherokee are the third of three teams to
qualify for the Hurster Cup Finals in St. Louis by virtue of their

when Chad Larkowski scored in the second. Chris
Saracino notched a power play for the Jr. Blues to
make it 4-1 but Nick Cinquegrani found the back of the
net to close the gap to two and Mike Glowa scored

of the game and Tom Lange would extend it to
three on the power play midway through the period. Kyle

In Detroit, the Motor City Chiefs and Michigan
Ice Dogs played a high scoring affair that saw the game see-saw
back and forth. Michigan took a two goal lead in the
first as Jordan Adams and Shawn Skelly

period would end tied at two. Dan Werner and Joe
Trotter would again give the Ice Dogs a two goal lead
but Bob Collar would close the gap to one on the power
play. Adams extended the lead to two goals with
his second of the game but Sean Webster answered for
the Chiefs. Skelly scored his second of

came roaring back at the end of the period. Clay
